In August 2019, Dr Edward Lahiff and Dr Nita Mishra of University College Cork (UCC) spent three weeks in Hanoi, working with colleagues at USSH. During this time, meetings were held with key informants in a range of social organisations. The team also worked on drafting the questionnaire to be used for interviews with migrant workers. A brief field visit was also made to Tan Trieu commune, in Thanh Tri District of Hanoi, to observe the living conditions of migrant workers and talk to members of the local community.
In October 2019, Dr Nita Mishra visited USSH and spent time with USSH colleagues on various aspects of the project. Pilot interviews were held with migrants working in sectors such as rubbish collection, street vending, domestic work and construction. Further discussions were held with our CSO partners to explore how we could collaborate most effectively.
In December 2019, Dr Edward Lahiff visited USSH to meet with colleagues and plan the next phases of the project. Extensive discussions were held around the analysis of the pilot interviews, with improvements being made to the research instruments. Secure storage and backup of data according to the project Data Management Plan was also verified. Plans were also made to hold a panel on Social Inclusion at the EADI ISS Conference to be held in the Netherlands in June 2020, with a number of papers based on project research. At the weekend, Dr Lahiff and other team members joined a fieldtrip by students of International Development Studies to Nghệ An province.
